WKBW Radio
Buffalo, New York

WKBW's signal is a legend in the radio industry. KB's nighttime coverage includes hundreds of counties, more than 20 states, five provinces of Canada and not to mention Norway, Finland, England, Germany, Scotland, Sweden, Italy, The Netherlands, South Africa, Guatemala, New Zealand and Australia. Due to radio signals bouncing off the ionosphere (sky waves), distances are greatly increased at night. Jackson Armstrong, on several different interviews, recalled how KB's great signal was heard around the world. Click here to listen to Armstrong's account.
The following maps show WKBW Radio's signal as it was broadcast during daytime and nighttime hours. These maps represent the reasonable coverage area, with a moderately strong signal, on most days. However radio signals can cover amazing distances if the conditions are favorable.
During a recent interview of Canadian Dave Somerville of the original Diamonds, Dave explained how rock 'n roll got to Canada. He remembers listening to WKBW Radio, a truly international 50,000 watt ambassador for rock 'n roll! Click here to listen to a short clip from an interview of Dave Somerville with Jimmy Jay.
Years past, in 1962, I was stationed at Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville Newfoundland. As I radio technician working maintenance in air traffic control, I use to modify old car radios with DC power supplies to be used in the barracks by my friends. These car radios were basically free of static thus great for receiving radio stations from a great distance. WKBW was one of the favorite and most memorable. I still remember the station jingle... "You're listening to WKBW... 1520 on your dial... In Buffalo New York" At 72 years old it still brings back fond memories. Please pass this message on to all interested parties. I understand the call sign has now changed.... but the memories haven't. Thank You..... and WKBW! Gerald L. "Jerry" Jones, SMSgt, USAF Ret.Mike Bugaj recorded a KB Exclusive from Sidi Yahia, Morocco in 1967, the Mon-kees' new record "Sleepy Jean." WKBW had it first in Buffalo and they let you know it! And they knew the competition would be trying to record it for themselves, so they fixed that problem! Listen
Also heard on September 8, 1977 from Slingo, Ireland WKBW radio broadcasting the Star Wars theme! Listen
