Henry Brach, Jim Fagan, John ZachIn 1958 Irv Weinstein became news director of WKBW Radios "Pulse Beat News." He developed the concept of twice an hour "rock n roll radio news" with fast-paced, sometimes bombastic delivery with a tabloid emphasis on the police blotter. "Crime Stoppers" and "Blaze Busters" became routine descriptors of Buffalo's Police and Fire Departments.
The following pre-recorded opening and closing of a WKBW newscast in 1958 was taped off-the-air in Manhattan. The then-recent launchings of the first space satellites probably inspired the universe idea. KB Action Central Pulsebeat News was presented twice an hour, at :15 and :45, 48 newscasts during a 24-hour broadcast day, so the time given for Buffalo-- and for Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn-- along with the edition number, changed accordingly. Time-checks for Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn? Sure, why should a station heard so many places on Earth not assume extraterrestrial listenership as well? We thank "Eric" from New York City for this rare submission.
In 1964 Irv took over as news director and lead anchor for WKBW-TV, channel 7.
Thanks to all the men and woman who made "Pulse Beat News" a memorable experience. Larry Brownell, Henry Brach, Jim Fagan, Bill Morrow, Joe Downey, John Zach, Ron Baskin, Jim McLaughlin, Bob Smith, John Jarrett, Sherry Margolis, Dick Kelsey, Mary Travers, Rob Stoddard, Karen Yakavak, Pat Brogan and the many others not listed here.
